What Are the Basics of Social Media Marketing?

The concept of social media marketing easily brings to mind websites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace,Twitter and YouTube.  These websites have millions of users that log in daily to check their accounts and other updates.  You should be one of those millions if you want to be an affective social media marketer to experience firsthand what all the fuss this has created in the cyberworld.  But these websites, no matter how popular, are just part of a very big concept that is social media marketing.

Social media is basically a type of online media where people are allowed to network with each other, share opinions, participate in various activities, and bookmark other website content.  Websites that are primarily geared towards social media marketing encourage discussion, comments and voting among users who may be interested.

Unlike traditional media, social media is a two-way communication process because it allows interaction among interested parties.  Users are not just fed with information because they are also given the opportunity to share what they have to say.  Furthermore, what sets social media apart from other forms of media is that users are all linked to other sites, resources, and to each other.

There are several categories of social media.  They can be classified as social news, social sharing, social networks, and social bookmarking.  Each site has its own unique characteristics. The only way for you to thoroughly understand how each site works is to get involved in these social media websites.  But you also have to keep in mind that not everything will work just because you’re engaging in social media marketing.  Even if you’re article has a catchy title with great content, it would still not guarantee success.  Social media marketing is also about trying different things, seeing their results, and analyzing how they came to be.  There is no exact formula for social media marketing success.

Remember that even if your campaign failed to catch on in a certain social media website, that doesn’t mean you totally failed.  The website you went to may just have a different target audience than what you expected.  For example, Digg does not cover all demographics for its users.  The site is mainly dominated by male users under age 24.  If you have a different set of audience, then this is not the website you should be marketing at.

There are many benefits of social media marketing.  It helps you manage your product’s branding, allows you to be more interactive with potential customers, helps you understand your target market, promotes your products at a lesser cost than traditional advertising, and many more.  That is no wonder a lot of companies are already shifting and discovering new ways to take advantage of social media marketing.
